The Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks of North Carolina have left a special mark on my heart. For one, it’s so pretty. The general attitude is laid back, it’s literally islands connected by highway and ferries. I honestly knew NOTHING about the Outer Banks, prior to staying here! I would go back in a heartbeat!

Funny story…. the first day we arrived, David walked outside our camper to a FLOOD! Our water hook-up literally fell apart on us. He called and called maintenance and was unable to get through – so we went to bed. The next morning we woke up to our street literally under water! Maintenance felt TERRIBLE. Long story short, they fixed it immediately and that was the end of that water mess. Thankfully it only flooded the street, not our campsite!

We stayed at a nice KOA on Cape Hatteras, which is pretty far south. At that point, we are miles and miles from mainland. We could not see mainland, when looking west, over the “sound”. That is the freshwater that mixes with saltwater, between mainland and the islands. We literally could watch the sunrise from the beach on one side of our campsite, and walk to the other end of the campground and watch it set across the “sound” water! Sadly, I did not get very many good photos of our campground.

Unfortunately, we were here during a VERY windy period. I mean…. so windy we were being knocked around! I would start dozing at night, and then wake up to being shaken… over…. and over…. and over… yikes! It was a lot of heavy wind. Perhaps wind is a normal thing there, but not for us. LOL

For those who do not know much about the outer banks, this is where Kittie Hawk is! AKA – the place where the first airplane flight took place! Obviously, to this aviation family, that is kind of a big deal. We had to commemorate this by learning how to hang-glide!

And I think it is safe to say we all fell in love with the sport of hang-gliding. It was so freeing! Due to wind, we were even given some extra flight time. Easy to say we LOVED it. We highly recommend hanging with the guys and gals at Kittie Hawk Kites and trying out hang gliding with them!

Of course we also saw where the Wright Brothers actually took their first flight! What a cool museum and park.

We celebrated actual Halloween here. It was another successful day of trick or treating!

And the last thing to note, is we met another full-time family here who we loved spending some time with. It was nice to fellowship with another family who is going through similar experiences!

Until next time!
