Charleston, South Carolina

Maybe someday I will catch up on these blog posts….

Today, I’m writing about the second week of November! We arrived in Charleston, South Carolina.

We were greeted, at our campground, by their fun Christmas light display! They were working on it, in preparation for their opening…. so we literally drove in to a light show. What a welcome!

We stayed at James Island Campground. It is a HUGE campground! More on my campground review at the end of this post…

After messaging a dear friend who lived in Charleston, SC…. we found out about a really fun spot: Bee City Zoo!

If you are a zoo person, and enjoy small zoos – this is the perfect spot for you! It is very interactive and great for just an afternoon. There is a REAL monkey who helps purchase tickets at the entrance…. and plenty of animals to feed inside. We LOVED it!

We opted to do their “animal encounter” also. This means that our family sat in a room and was given time to play with a sloth named Gertrude, a raccoon named Meeko, an opossum (whose name we couldn’t remember), and a lemur (also can’t remember his name). Oh it was SO fun!! Surprisingly, the lemur was our favorite. The sloth was cute, and really fun to feed…. but man she was slow.

The raccoon just wanted to escape, and spent all 15 minutes trying to leave. LOL

And the opossum was sweet, but drooled everywhere.

The lemur? HYSTERICAL! He had his little diaper on, and he jumped everywhere – including on our heads! He was so cute and curious. We laughed so hard at that little dude.

We also had some great laughs in the bird area. David was a bird magnet, and hated every second of it. LOL Apparently they love hats and bags. He had both.

They also love shoes…. so strange, but funny to try to walk around them. They sort of skip around to move away from you when you walk.

And of course, we got a second round of most of the animals in their exhibits. We even got to feed all of the lemur families out in their home, once more.

Other than the zoo, we also visited downtown Charleston. We took an afternoon and walked down Rainbow Row. What a fun street, full of character!

We saw the infamous “pineapple fountain”.

And we walked to the end of the pier.

Based on another great recommendation, we ate at a fantastic Mexican food joint called Mex1. SO yummy! We may have gone back another time too…. all in the same week.

Charleston was such a neat city. We lacked in time to do all we hoped to. The weather was so warm, and rainy. The people were so friendly. And the city was so neat. I think we all would go back there in a heartbeat!
