Leaving Kansas, we had a couple long travel days on our way to Wisconsin. We saw so many things, I am going to break these days into two separate posts!
Travel day 1: We said our sweet goodbyes to family in Kansas, and made our way towards Kansas City, Missouri.
Our first stop: National World War I Museum. I know, sounds boring to some…. (me LOL) but it was actually pretty great! It had some fantastic exhibits and the kids were given a pretty great explanation on the history.
We have gotten a lot of questions on how Covid-19 is affecting our trip. We have not had much issue, except that most “touristy” type places are closed and we have avoided crowds. Other than that, there are just a lot of masks everywhere… including this guy….
After that, we made it into Iowa! So far, this is the most beautiful state we have been through, in our opinion. These photos do NOT do it justice…. such green rolling hills. I am certain, however, I would be feeling much differently in the winter-time. LOL
We spent a very brief night in Des Moines…. and then we hit the road again! We made a stop in the Amana Colonies. This is an old German colony that had moved to Iowa. They have been around since 1714 and are now a historical landmark. The landscape here was GORGEOUS! We walked around the shops (including a cute little toy shop with the sweetest worker! Shout out if you read this! :)), went into their famous clock and furniture shop, and ate at a cute German café.
We then hit the road again and made a stop at the famous “Field of Dreams” movie site!
What a fun stop this was. We even saw the most perfect rainbow behind the house of the Field of Dreams. We were able to play some ball, and because it had just rained, we had the field to ourselves! If you have never seen this movie before, we highly recommend it. Great for the whole family!
Shortly after visiting the field, we made our way to an over-night campsite. We had found a city park, and at 1am…. we arrived…. and realized we did not fit into the camping area. Well, we were too tired to move….. and really had no where to go. So what did we do? We made our own spot in the grass!
Let’s just say…. much humor was involved to get us through this late-night annoyance…. and yes, the park ranger totally knocked on our door at 630am the next morning (as expected). But he completely understood and we were gone by 8am…. off to Minnesota!
